Here Are The Women of Y Combinator And They Are Awesome

Olga-VidishevaI would normally rather have a root canal instead of write about the issue of women in technology. I just find most essays on this really tedious and obvious. (Sorry Alexia.) But I do want to point one thing out. When I went to my first Y Combinator Demo Day three years ago, there was one woman. At this week's Demo Day, there were six companies with one or all female founders among the 66 startups in the class. I'm going to keep this post simple. No complaining. Less navel gazing. Just more role models. So here are the women of Y Combinator and they are awesome:

Up-Close with the 2012 Zero S ZF9

While still maintaining the product line’s general aesthetic from its previous generations, Zero Motorcycles has refined and polished its electric motorcycles for 2012. This is primarily due to the Zero’s limited amount of time to further develop its 2011 models for the 2012 model year (roughly nine months says the Californian company), but still Zero has been able to revise most of the Zero S’s components to warrant this year’s models to be visually and ...

Opera Mini 7 comes to Google Play, treads lightly on your data plan

Image
As any Opera loving Android user will tell you, good things come to those who wait -- and folks waiting for the latest version of Opera Mini to hit their devices can now relax. It's here. Like its predecessors, Opera Mini 7 promises to slash your device's data usage and speed up its browsing by compressing data on a proxy server, pushing a lightweight, reformatted page to your device. Mini 7 continues this tradition, of course, but also lets users add more favorites to their Opera home screen, upping the max from nine to "as many Speed Dial buttons as you'll ever want." Read on for the app's official press release, or hit up the source link below for its Google Play page.

Official: BMW delivers first 40 of 4,000 vehicles destined for London Olympics

BMW 320d and 520d for London Olympics

We couldn't fault you if it came as no great surprise that BMW was the main automotive sponsor of this summer's Olympic games in London. The Bavarian automaker has, after all, done its homework to promote the partnership, launching special edition 1 and 3 Series, a pair of special edition Minis, a commercial using the new M5, and a video series profiling specific athletes, all to highlight the point. But the biggest way BMW will be participating in the event is with the massive fleet of vehicles it is providing to the organizers.

All in all, BMW will be furnishing the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralymic Games (LOCOG) with a whopping 4,000 vehicles. The fleet is made up of diesel, hybrid and electric cars, plus motorcycles and bicycles. And because LOCOG has set a low CO2 target for the big event, each vehicle averages less than 120g of CO2 per kilometer.

The first 40 specially liveried vehicles, BMW announced, have now been delivered, including examples of the 520d and 320d. All the German automaker has left is multiply those a hundredfold and it'll be ready for the big games.

What's New With Katy Perry? Luscious Lashes!

KatyPerry0321.jpg
Chart-topping singer-songwriter? Check! Fashion icon and all-things-style risk-taker? Check, check! Beauty-biz mogul? Well, Katy Perry is certainly on her way! After a successful nail polish collaboration with OPI and her second fragrance collection launch in the bag, the "Part of Me" singer joins forces with Eylure for ? you guessed it! ? her own line of falsies.

The 27-year-old pop star ? who fell in "love" with Eylure faux lashes while on her California Dreams tour ? explains, ?When it came to having a range of my own, I wanted everyone to have a great experience with my lashes. As they have such an amazing history and great quality, Eylure was really the best choice for me to work with.?

Featuring a 1940s-style ice cream parlor logo, the brand's four lash varieties include everything from natural sets ("Sweetie Pie") to more standout strips, like "Oh, My" ? which Katy calls "the perfect accessory for your eyes!"

Katy Perry Lashes created by Eylure are available at ULTA Beauty Stores and online at ulta.com.

BlueStacks App Player hits beta, supports ARM-written Android apps on x86-based Windows (video)

Image
We've been eagerly anticipating the full-on release of BlueStacks' App Player, so imagine our excitement, now that the software has officially made the leap from its brief alpha stage to "beta-1" status. If you'll recall, the App Player can virtually run over 450k Android apps on Windows XP, Vista and 7, all without developers needing to tweak their respective coding. Notably, this latest build has a host of updates including LayerCake, allowing x86-based machines run apps written for ARM -- and with hardware graphics acceleration, no less. Other notable goodies from the beta build include official localization in 10 countries, mock accelerometer support (arrow keys), an updated UI and Direct AppStore Access. If the mere thought of running Android Angry Birds on Windows has your interests piqued, you'll find further details about BlueStacks in the full press release and video overview past the break.

Battle of the fight promos: How an unknown becomes famous and ?Bones? gets arty

MMA has made huge leaps in promoting fights. Instead of videos that just show highlights backed by loud rap or metal music, they tell the story of why you want to tune in. These two videos from Bellator and the UFC fit that bill.

First, Bellator promotes its upcoming season by pushing the best part of their tournament. Lightweight champion Michael Chandler went from an unknown to a star thanks to his run through last season's tourney and his win over Eddie Alvarez. Now, Bellator has a whole new crop of lightweights who want to follow his example.

Next, the UFC takes a more artistic look at Jon Jones' submission of Lyoto Machida.

AT&T's Galaxy S II wants to play too, gets leaked Android 4.0 upgrade
AT&T's Galaxy S II was probably feeling a little left out in the cold when its younger, LTE-gifted sibling got its ICS coat early. Fortunately, yet another software upgrade has broken cover, courtesy of Rootzwiki. Like anyone who's wrestling with the Skyrocket leak yesterday, those with some know-how of Ice Cream builds and Odin installations -- or just plain desperate for the very latest Google OS -- can hit the source for those necessary files.

[Thanks Mike]

Official: Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione makes its track debut at Suzuka [w/video]

Ferrari 599XX Evo

Ferrari is an automaker the operates in two spheres: racing and road cars. The company builds the latter to fund the former, but while the two have long operated as fairly separate units, there is plenty of room for overlap. Like its Corse Clienti department.

Established to facilitate privateer racing teams running Ferrari GT cars in various series, the Corse Clienti division also runs the firm's elite XX development program that allows some of its best customers the opportunity to act as "client test drivers." In other words, people pay big money - and by big, we mean millions - to test out new equipment developed by Maranello's skunkworks before it's implemented on future road cars.

The program started with the Enzo-based FXX back in 2005, which was succeeded by the 599XX in 2009. But like the FXX led to the even more extreme FXX Evoluzione, so has the 599XX. More an upgrade package than a new car, the $250,000 evolution kit includes a bigger front splitter, giant rear wing with moving foils, a 30-horsepower upgrade to 740 and another two years of factory-supported track days.

The most recent was held at Japan's Suzuka circuit, where the 599XX Evoluzione hit the track for the first time since delivery to its eager new owners. It was also the first time the upgraded track car was run in public, following its debut at the Bologna Motor Show back in December. Of course, now that the 599 range is being phased out, we can't help but wonder what Ferrari will base its next developmental track car on: the new F12 Berlinetta? The 458 Italia? The upcoming Enzo successor? It's early to tell, but you can check out the 599XX doing its thing in the video clip and press release after the jump, along with the fresh crop of high-resolution images we've added to the gallery.

MMA Marketplace: A tiny championship belt for your little fighter doll

If one of your MMA dolls, erm, action figures has proven himself to be better than the rest, doesn't he deserve a championship belt? You're in luck. There is an Etsy store that can help you with that.

When one of your action figures wins the belt, all the other ones will yell, "I want my belt back!" or "I want B.J.'s belt!" They may even get on their knees to beg you for a title shot, but at some point you will have to make hard decisions on which doll gets the next chance to win the title.

Or, since they cost just $3, you can just buy a belt for every doll.

RIM putting BlackBerry 10 test units in developers' hands in May

It's telling, perhaps, when a VP for your company uses the word "finally" while discussing plans to release test models for your upcoming mobile operating system -- but it's certainly a pretty accurate sentiment when dealing BlackBerry 10. Talking up RIM's plans to release up to 2,000 prototypes running the OS at the BlackBerry Jam conference in May, executive Alec Saunders had this to say: "It's tangible evidence of the company making progress to finally shipping the device." Barring any further setbacks, the operating system formerly known as BBX is set to hit before year's end.

[Thanks, Neil]
